Weather

Hello! In this lesson, we will learn about different types of weather in English. To do this, we will learn adjectives which will describe how the weather is, using the verb “to be” in the present tense. First, we must learn some nouns that we associate with weather in English.

Sun

Sunshine

Heat

Wind

Air

Sky

Flurries

Hail

Rain

Raindrops

Puddles

Precipitation

Humidity

Fog

Cloud

Storm

Lightning

Thunder

Now, we must learn to ask how the weather is. The simple question to ask when trying to find out about the weather is “How is the weather?” We may also ask “What is the weather like?”

Here are several ways to answer the question “How is the weather?” or “What is the weather like?”

It is hot.

It is cold.

It is cool.

It is nice out.

It is a clear day.

It is bad weather.

It is humid.

It is heavy.

It is sunny.

It is foggy.

It is cloudy.

It is stormy.

It is windy.

It is dry.

It is wet.

It is snowing.

It is freezing.

It is raining.

It is pouring.

It is drizzling.

It is hailing.

To ask if it is a specific type of weather where someone is, we may ask “Is it” followed by the verb describing the weather, followed by “where you are?”

For example, if we want to find out if it is raining where someone is, we ask “Is it raining where you are?” This is useful if we want to find out how to dress appropriately if we do not know how the weather is.

Perfect! Now that you know all about the weather in English, it is your turn to start practicing.
