Vocabulary Builder- Regular verbs in the present tense 2

Hello! In this lesson we will learn how to conjugate many more regular verbs in the present tense in English. Remember that verbs are words that usually denote an action, but may occasionally denote an occurrence , or a state of being. Also, remember that conjugating a verb refers to showing all the possible forms that a verb may take in a particular verb tense. For the purposes of this lesson we will only be focusing on conjugating verbs in the present tense. Regular verbs are verbs whose conjugation follows a particular pattern.

Let us review how to conjugate regular verbs in the present tense. We will start with the a verb we have learned in a previous lesson, the verb “to eat”

To eat

I eat

you eat

he eats

she eats

we eat

they eat

Notice how each conjugated form is exactly the same except for “he eats” and “she eats” which each have an “s” on the end of the verb. This simple pattern of conjugation is followed by all regular verbs in the present tense. Let us look at number of verbs which are regular in the present tense.

Listen carefully to the pronunciation of each word and watch the shape of my mouth as I speak. Then, say each word while watching your own mouth on the webcam. If you do not have your webcam connected, simply practice repeating the words.

need

bring

allow

fall

fill

find

open

close

pay

play

put

read

run

say

see

sing

sit

smoke

stand

start

Each of these verbs is conjugated in the exact same way in the present tense. For example, the verb “need” is conjugated as follows:

To need

I need

you need

he needs

she needs

we need

they need

Notice how each conjugated form is exactly the same except for “he needs” and “she needs” which each have an “s” on the end of the verb. This simple pattern of conjugation is followed by all regular verbs in the present tense. Lets us look at another example, the verb “play” is conjugated as follows:

To play

I play

you play

he plays

she plays

we play

they play

Notice how each conjugated form is exactly the same except for “he plays” and “she plays” which each have an “s” on the end of the verb.

Lets us look at another example, the verb “run” is conjugated as follows:

To run

I run

you run

he runs

she runs

we run

they run

Notice how each conjugated form is exactly the same except for “he runs” and “she runs” which each have an “s” on the end of the verb.

Excellent! In this lesson we learned a lot more verbs that are regular in the present tense . You may revisit this lesson at any time if you need to remind yourself of any of this material.
