Part 3: 21-100

Hello! In this lesson we will learn the English cardinal numbers from twenty-one to one hundred. The cardinal numbers are critical to developing your skills in English. They will assist you with dates, time, and of course, counting. The numbers system may seem complex at first, but soon you will notice a pattern.

We will begin this lesson by learning the numbers twenty-one to twenty-nine. If you have already mastered the numbers zero to twenty, you may find that many of the other numbers follow the same pattern and will have no problem learning these numbers. Let's start by looking at the numbers and saying them aloud.

21 twenty-one

22 twenty-two

23 twenty-three

24 twenty-four

25 twenty-five

26 twenty-six

27 twenty-seven

28 twenty-eight

29 twenty-nine

This group of numbers is known as the “twenties”. Each number in this range will increase incrementally by one the same way that the numbers one to ten increase. That is, each number begins with the word “twenty”, and we subsequently latch the number “one” onto the end of the word to become “twenty-one”. The next number in the sequence begins with the word “twenty”, and we latch the number “two” onto the end to become “twenty-two”. This pattern continues on until we reach the number “twenty-nine”, where “nine” has been latched to the end of the number “twenty”.

Next, we will learn the numbers thirty to thirty-nine. These follow the exact same pattern as twenty-one to twenty-nine, so you will have no problem learning these numbers. Let's start by looking at the numbers and saying them aloud.

30 thirty

31 thirty-one

32 thirty-two

33 thirty-three

34 thirty-four

35 thirty-five

36 thirty-six

37 thirty-seven

38 thirty-eight

39 thirty-nine

This group of numbers is known as the “thirties”. Each number in this range will increase incrementally by one the same way that the numbers twenty to twenty-nine increase. That is, each number begins with the word “thirty” and we subsequently latch the number “one” onto the end of the word to become “thirty-one”. The next number in the sequence begins with the word “thirty” and we latch the number “two” onto the end to become “thirty-two”. This pattern continues until we reach the number “thirty-nine”, where “nine” has been latched to the end of the number “thirty”.

As you can see, each group of ten numbers follows the same pattern as the ten before, from “twenty” all the way to “one hundred”. Now, we will go over each group of ten and remind you of the pattern as we go.

40 forty

50 fifty

60 sixty

70 seventy

80 eighty

90 ninety

100 one hundred

Each group of numbers follows the same pattern as both the “twenties” and the “thirties”. Each number begins with one of these words, and ends with one of the digits from “one” to “nine”. For example, the number 67 would be written as “sixty” plus the number “seven”, making it “sixty-seven”. The number 81 would be written as “eighty” plus the number “one”, making it “eighty-one”.

As you have noticed, if a number is in the range 21 to 99, and the second digit is not zero, we write the number as two words separated by a hyphen.

Super! Now that you have a thorough understanding of the English cardinal numbers, you can now count to one hundred in English. Practice what you have learned, and soon we will learn the numbers above one hundred.
