Hello! In this lesson, we will learn several nouns in English which are used to describe family members. Remember that nouns are words which refer to a person, place, or thing. Let us look at the most common nouns used to describe family members in English.

Listen carefully to the pronunciation of each word and watch the shape of my mouth as I speak. Then, say each word while watching your own mouth on the webcam. If you do not have your webcam connected, simply practice repeating the words.

father

mother

son

daughter

sibling

sister

brother

grandparent

grandfather

grandmother

aunt

uncle

niece

nephew

cousin

It is also very common in English to substitute the words “dad” for “father” and “mom” for “mother”. These are more informal words, but are used interchangeably depending on the family. The word “kid” is another informal word which can be used in the place of “son” or “daughter”. “Grandfather” and “grandmother” are the two most formal names for grandparents, but most families use variations on these titles, such as “grandpa” for “grandfather” and “grandma” for “grandmother”.

Excellent! In this lesson we learned several nouns in English which are used to describe family members. Now you know what titles the people in your family will take in relation to you. You may revisit this lesson at any time if you need to remind yourself of any of this material.
